R.J. Shelton is an explosive play maker — that much has been clear from any highlights or accounts of the Beaver Dam running backs’ abilities.
On Friday, he put up another big game and broke the 1,000-yard mark for the season.
Shelton rushed for 232 yards on 16 carries and scored four touchdowns in a 34-6 win. Shelton now has 1,222 yards on 134 carries and 14 rushing touchdowns this season.
Last year, Shelton rushed for 2,045 yards on 218 attempts (9.39 yards per attempt) and 32 touchdowns as a junior on his way to being named second-team all-state.
Unlike Shelton, Flint Carman-Ainsworth running back Gerald Holmes struggled in a 32-7 loss to Flint Powers. Holmes had just 15 yards on eight carries, making his season totals 688 yards on 55 carries and 10 touchdowns.
The loss was C-A’s first of the season.
Damion Terry helped keep Erie (Pa.) Cathedral Prep undefeated with a big showing against rival McDowell in a 41-27 win. Terry was 18-of-30 passing for 193 yards with four touchdowns.
He eclipsed the 5,000-yard mark for his career in the game. He now has 5,187 yards with 60 touchdowns and 14 interceptions. For 2012, Terry is 98-of-136 passing for 1,520 yards. He has thrown 23 touchdown passes and has five rushing scores. He also has thrown only one interception — in the team’s first game. He has thrown 118 passes without an interception.
Grand Rapids Christian’s Drake Harris continued his huge season from the wide receiver position. Harris led the Eagles with seven receptions for 103 yards and two touchdowns. His season totals now stand at 46 catches for 907 yards and 13 touchdowns.
Downingtown (Pa.) East’s Jay Harris also had two receiving touchdowns in his team’s 26-21 win. He has nine touchdown catches.
Future MSU cornerback Darian Hicks had a touchdown catch, while safety commit Jalyn Powell had a 47-yard punt return for a touchdown.
