It was true after all. After reports two weeks ago indicated running back R.J Shelton would commit on his junior day visit, he became the fourth verbal commitment when he made his decision Sunday morning.
“Proud to say that I will be a MSU SPARTAN!!” Shelton tweeted.
Shelton spoke with Mark Dantonio this morning to tell him he would commit. The 5-foot-11, 185 pound back rushed for 2,045 yards on 218 attempts (9.39 yards per attempt) and 32 touchdowns as a junior on his way to being named second-team all-state.
He also plays baseball and basketball. He was a first-team all-conference selection in baseball and a second-team all-conference selection in basketball as a sophomore.
Scout.com lists Shelton as a running back/wide receiver, and he also plays defensive back.
It could be he makes a position switch to wide receiver, and plays a Keshawn Martin-type role based on his size. Gerald Holmes, the previous 2013 running back commit, is a bigger back and Shelton, who might be one of the fastest running backs in this class, could bring a great burst and really provide a good complement to Holmes.
MSU likely will not take another running back in the class of 2013. Shelton was the second pledge this weekend, after Jalyn Powell decided to become a Spartan on Saturday night.
